Aruna Roy

On Information as Power

A Ramon Magsaysay Award winner, a former civil servant, seventy-two-year-old Aruna Roy left the bureaucracy within a few years, setting up the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS) in 1987, which worked with farmers and labourers first in rural Rajasthan and then across India. It is in Devdungri, Rajsamand, in Rajasthan that she and leaders of the MKSS first found evidence of labourers not being paid their dues by government contractors for work done with no way to access the information of where the money was going. And it was here that the Right to Information (RTI) struggle was born. As a prominent leader of the RTI movement and part of the Sonia Gandhi–led National Advisory Council (NAC), Aruna Roy worked actively with the government to ensure this landmark legislation became law in 2005. This right gives every Indian citizen access to information regarding their government. In essence, it has transferred the power of knowledge to the people. She continues her fight to ensure the law isn’t diluted in its implementation.*
